More visiting April 3rd memorial
51% increase in attendance since Peace Park’s 2008 opening

The island’s April 3rd Incident memorial was visited by a record number of people this year.

According to a year-end report by the provincial government, 154,000 visitors came to the memorial center building on the grounds of the April 3rd Peace Park from January through November. That’s a 51 percent increase from 2008 when 101,000 people came to the center in its inaugural year.

The report noted that some 2,000 non-Koreans were among the total number of visitors.

The April 3rd Peace Park is putting 10.4 billion won of national funding into the construction of a Peace Education Center and a space for children to learn about this dark chapter in the island’s history. This is the third phase in the park’s construction. The two buildings scheduled to be completed in December 2016.

2008년 개관 당시 10만1천명에서 올들어 지난달까지 15만 4천명으로 51% 증가했습니다.

특히 방문객 가운데 외국인도 매년 2천여 명이 찾아 다크투어리즘 명소로 각광받고 있습니다.

4.3평화공원은 3단계 공원조성사업의 일환으로 국비 104억원을 들여 내년 12월까지 평화교육센터와 어린이체험관 공사를 추진하고 있습니다.
