Between (산방) Sanbangsan Mountain and (용머리) Yongmeori Cliff is some unused land that was approved for development over 30 years ago. Seogwipo wants to build a park there, but not all nearby landowners agree with the plan. Mike Balfour has more.

Sanbangsan Mountain and Yongmeori Cliff

(산방산) Sanbangsan Mountain and (용머리) Yongmeori Cliff are representative tourist attractions of the southwest side of the island.

Down a trail is a hollow.

A rusty steel fence surrounds the place and it is dense with scrub and weeds.

(용머리) Yongmeori Cliff was approved for development in 1986 and it has remained as a nominal tourist site for over 30 years.

The abandoned area has been a long time issue for both tourists and vendors.

\2.6b secured for project, but no action yet

Seogwipo City has announced that next year it will buy the land for building a park.

For the project, the municipal government has secured 2.6 billion won, however, so far nothing has been launched.

About 60 landowners in the area are divided over the plan to build the park.

Landowners are divided over the construction of the entrance road to the planned park. Everyone would have to donate a portion of their land to do so, but not everybody wants to.

There have been 3 planning presentations but the interested parties so far have failed to settle the disagreement.

Consequently, Seogwipo City’s plan has been suspended.
