Jeju City officials must meet with Bonggae-dong residents to discuss extending the use of the landfill until 2018. Here’s Mike Balfour to explain what’s holding up those meetings.

INTERVIEW
Jeju City representative
We are now burying waste in Zones 3 and 4. Their planned height is higher than Zones 1 and 2, so we are considering using those after Zones 3 and 4 are full.

To use Zones 1 and 2 again, agreement from area residents is needed. But negotiation between the city and area residents has been delayed. The municipal government has failed to persuade Bonggae-dong residents.
INTERVIEW
Kim Byung-lip / Jeju City mayor (Dec.17)
Residents want a solar energy system built on provincial property. The matter is out of the city government’s authority and the demand is too much.
To complicate matters, the term for the Bonggae-dong landfill residents’ committee has expired, so a new committee needs to be formed. Therefore negotiations are postponed for now.
INTERVIEW
Hong Seong-cheol / Residents’ landfill committee
As far as I know, another 6 months are needed to approve the use of Zones 1 and 2 even after a compromise. So, I believe we should expedite the negotiations.
