The province is planning to form new residential districts on the island. Instead of creating large checkerboard patterned districts, officials envision small zones that better blend in with the surroundings and landscape. Mike Laidman reports.
The island has been building new housing districts as a solution to the housing shortage.


42 zones have been created over the last 50 years.
They cover over 2 million square meters.

Province plans new residential development style

New populations flow in and infrastructure is built in new residential districts.

However, new town developments can cause real estate speculation as land prices go up.

The province has recently announced that it will develop a different style of housing zone from now on. The plan is included in the provincial housing welfare scheme.

Instead of developing checkerboard-patterned residential areas, the province will form a tentatively-titled "Olle-style residential zone" that harmonizes with the island's landscape and culture.

The island announced that it will refuse the existing method of commissioning large condominium or residential blocks to private developers. Instead, it will make better use of already-developed areas.


Areas designated as urban development sites will be considered first for new residential district formation. And developing state- or publicly-owned land to include road, water, and drainage systems will also be considered.

The island also has an urban restoration plan to build parks and cultural spaces around the old city center.


The province is also planning to create housing zones that harmonize with existing landscapes and neighborhoods.

The two municipal administrations are waiting for the results of a feasibility study for their planned residential district developments.

The provincial office will decide on the areas and specific plans for development before July, based on the study results.
