Crackdown on origin labeling ahead of Lunar New Year
Violators face stiff fines, prison sentences

Authorities are cracking down on false country-of-origin labeling of agricultural products in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year holidays.

The Jeju branch of the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service began on January 8th a crackdown at traditional markets, large retailers, and online shopping sites. The increased oversight will remain through February 5th.

Officials will screen agricultural product labels for any goods that falsely claim to be locally-produced or on which the variety and/or production date have been deliberately altered.

Anyone found to have falsely labeled their agricultural products will face a prison term of up to 7 years or a fine of up to 100 million won. The penalty for not having an origin label at all will be a fine of up to 10 million won.

설 명절을 앞두고 제수용 농식품 원산지 표시에 대한 단속이 이뤄집니다.

국립농산물품질관리원 제주지원은 오늘(8일)부터 다음달 5일까지
도내 전통시장과 대형유통업체, 인터넷 쇼핑몰 등을 대상으로
제수용 농식품의 원산지 표시 위반 행위 등을 집중 단속합니다.

단속 내용은 수입 농산물을 국산으로 속이거나
품종·생산연도를 속이는 행위 등입니다.

만약 원산지를 거짓으로 표기하다 적발되면
7년 이하 징역이나 1억 원 이하의 벌금에 처해지며,
원산지를 표시하지 않은 경우
1천만 원 이하의 과태료 처분을 받게 됩니다.
