KCTV: Priorities: Environment and Compensation

As we heard yesterday, most island residents support the construction of a second airport on the island. But what specific issues regarding the project do they think are most important? Here’s Lee Hee-jung with what poll respondents said topped their list of concerns.

The environment is important to our lives on the island, so I hope officials keep that in mind.

# Priorities for new airport construction




What to Jeju Islanders think is most important regarding the construction of the second airport? How can officials prevent real estate speculation? Let’s see what poll respondents had to say.

The majority of respondents expressed a desire to minimize the environmental impact of a new airport during construction.

24.9 percent of islanders felt communication with and support for area residents was of greatest importance. 13.6 percent to the resident relocation and compensation plan, 10.6 percent to the overall development plan for the entire island and 8.7 percent to land speculation control.

Then, what do islanders think is important about compensation?



23.5 percent of respondents say compensation for land expropriation should be reasonable.

22.1 percent of respondents say financial support is the most important. 16.3 percent say job creation, 16 percent answered residents’ participation in development and benefit sharing while 15.6 percent say relocation and farming support.



# Land speculation control



About the question on land speculation control at the chosen site for the new airport, 64.2 percent of respondents say that control should be more stringent.

Meanwhile, 19.2 percent say the current level of control is proper and 6.7 percent say control should be eased.



# When should construction be finished?

Lastly, we asked for the islanders’ opinions about the timeline for completion of the construction.



39.1 percent says it should be completed in 2025 as Seoul plans.

Meanwhile, 30.6 percent believe the completion date should be pushed forward and 13 percent believe after the 2025 is acceptable.

KCTV Jeju commissioned the survey to (미래) Mirae Research and the survey had been carried out for a week from December 30th, 2015. 500 adults residing in Jeju were surveyed. The team used an organized questionnaire and conducted individual interviews.

This census has a 95-percent confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 4.38 percentage points.
