Kang Yo-bae, ‘2015 Flows By’

The green and yellow hues that cover this large canvas are reminiscent of a vast Jeju field that carries with it the earthy scent of mugwort.

Created by artist (강요배) Kang Yo-bae, this art piece is called “2015 Flows By”.

Ko Eun, ‘A Happy Story’

A single tree... is the distance between the house in front and the house behind. It is within this short distance that flowers blossom and trees bear fruit. This depiction of a Jeju village is titled “A Happy Story” by artist (고은) Ko Eun.

Gallery Nori holds 5th anniversary exhibition
Through January 31

A collection of artworks such as these are on display at the Gallery Nori, which is celebrating its five year anniversary.

INTERVIEW
Kim Eun-joong / Head, Gallery Nori
There are various artworks, but a big emphasis has been placed on the landscape of Jeju, captured by a number of local artists. In particular, if you look at the work by Kang Yo-bae, you can almost feel the winds of Jeju even though there is no apparent form.

"다양한 작품이 있지만 특히 제주 작가들에 의해서 제주 풍광을 느낄 수 있는 작품들이 많이 전시돼 있고, 특히 강요배 선생님 작품을 보면

형태는 없지만 제주의 바람을 몸소 느낄 수 있습니다."

Gallery Nori was founded in 2010... in the Jeoji Art Village. At the time, it wasn’t common for people from the mainland to move to Jeju, let alone open an art gallery here.

But five years on, the daring move has proven to be good worth, as the gallery now serves as a cultural bridge between relocated artists and the local villagers.

INTERVIEW
Kim Eun-joong / Head, Gallery Nori
Just thinking how we made it through the past five years makes me want to continue developing this gallery into an iconic cultural space in the Jeoji Art Village.

"5년을 버텨왔구나 라는 생각이 들면서 앞으로 저지예술인마을에서 저희가 진정한 문화를 계속 일궈나갈 수 있는 공간이 돼야겠다는

새로운 다짐을 하게 만듭니다."

20 artists took part in creating the works... on display at Gallery Nori’s special art exhibit.

The exhibition not only highlights the past five years of a gallery that came to be, but it offers a glimpse of what it was that captured the hearts of hearts of each of the artists who now call Jeju home.
