More than \100m in well-wishing coins at Cheonjiyeon Falls
Funds donated to Community Chest of Korea

Close to a decade since the city of Seogwipo started collecting coins thrown into Cheonjiyeon Falls for good luck… the total sum of money has surpassed 100 million won.

Seogwipo officials started retrieving the coins from the waterfall in 2007. The running total at the end of last year was 110 million won.

The money is being donated to the Community Chest of Korea to help the underprivileged.

Coin-tossing is a popular activity at Cheonjiyeon Falls, especially around its three statues that stand for good luck. Those sculptures are in the form of a mandarin duck, a carp, and a tortoise.

관광객들이 소원을 빌며 던진 동전이 1억 원을 넘었습니다.

서귀포시 관광지관리사무소가 지난 2007년부터 지난해까지
관광객들이 천지연폭포 동물상에 던진 동전을 수거한 결과
1억 1천만 원에 달한 것으로 집계됐습니다.

관광지관리사무소는 수거한 동전을 사회복지공동모금회에 기탁해
어려운 이웃을 돕는데 쓰고 있습니다.

천지연폭포에는 원앙, 잉어, 거북이 등 3가지 복을 상징하는 동물상이 있는데
관광객들이 동전을 던지며 소원을 빌고 있습니다.
