Jeju Airport resumes operations noon Monday
Due to the largest amount of snow Jeju has seen in over three decades, tens of thousands of passengers remain stranded on the island for three consecutive days due to the poor weather conditions.

A new report by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade shows that Jeju ranks the lowest in the nation for its ability to secure and train talented individuals. Seoul topped the list, followed by Daejeon and Gyeonggi province. Pundits say this is acting as a stumbling block in Jeju’s growth potential.

Jeju sees worst snow in 32 years
The Jemin Ilbo says much of the island came to a standstill over the weekend, as all flights and ferry sailings were cancelled, and icy roads brought traffic to a standstill. At one point, hikers became stranded on Hallasan Mountain and some districts experienced power and water supply outages.

Underground shopping mall plan opposed
A plan to build an underground shopping mall beneath Gwangyang Rotary is facing several hurdles as vendors at existing markets and shopping districts oppose the project. They cite potential heavy traffic congestion in the area as one of the reasons for their opposition.

Thousands stranded at Jeju Airport
Halla Ilbo says that since Saturday more than 70,000 passengers have been stranded on the island due to cancelled flights. About fifteen-hundred people were forced to sleep inside the terminal over the weekend, with only cardboard boxes for shelter. Others have reportedly been relocated to nearby accommodations.

Jeju apartment prices skyrocket
Apartment prices in Jeju have shot up to six times the national average. An apartment here cost around 228 million won on average at the end of 2015… up from 153 million a year earlier.

Yonhap news says that the nation hasn’t seen the mercury drop this much since January 2001. The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a cold wave warning for Seoul Saturday, the first in 5 years. Meanwhile businesses are reporting a significant loss of revenue as shoppers stay at home.

Labor union to be sanctioned if strike goes ahead
Justice Minister Kim Hyun-woong said Sunday that if a proposed general strike goes ahead on Monday, the the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions will be held responsible for “damages”. At issue are new guidelines making the local labor market more flexible, including the ability for companies to more easily fire workers.
