A driver in his thirties who authorities say staged a car crash in order to collect the insurance payout has been caught. Police say they figured out the accident he was involved in was intentional by analyzing video footage. Joseph Kim reports.

A silver sedan is seen making an illegal left turn across the yellow centerline.
Another sedan hesitates for a second, but then speeds up and crashes into the back of the silver car.

At first, the driver of the silver car was blamed for the accident.
However, upon further review, it was deemed an intentional crash caused by the other driver in his thirties in hopes of getting insurance money. He targeted a car that made a traffic violation.

I admit that I violated traffic laws so I felt guilty. Fortunately, the cars were only slightly damaged. I thought that we could reach a compromise by talking. But his response was too violent and stubborn.

Upon the suspect’s request, police analyzed video recorded with nearby surveillance cameras and a dashboard camera. But, contrary to the suspect’s expectations, police were able to identify his intentional car crash.

Suspect charged with intentionally causing accident
The suspect denied the charges at first. But, eventually confessed to the crime and was booked without physical detention.

The number of insurance scams from intentional car crashes has recently increased across the nation.

If you suspect that a car crash is made deliberately for insurance money, it is advised to secure video recorded with nearby surveillance cameras and witnesses and report it to the police.
