The Jemin Ilbo says 85,000 of the stranded passengers here are expected to have departed by the end of Tuesday, and that airport operations will likely be back to normal by sometime Wednesday morning.

Donations of food and other necessities for the stranded passengers have helped to warm hearts in an otherwise frosty climate. Local residents also opened up their homes as many travelers were unable to find a place to stay after their flights had been cancelled.

The Halla Ilbo is reporting that around 30,000 travelers left the island on flights between 3 o’clock Monday afternoon and 6 o’clock Tuesday morning, but that another roughly 70,000 remain stranded. It argues the round-the-clock flights are not enough to ease the situation.

Childbirths increase for second month in November
Yonhap is reporting that the number of childbirths in South Korea rose for the second straight month in November. A government report showed Tuesday that childbirths were up four percent compared to the same month in 2014. This is welcoming news for Seoul, which is dealing with a rapidly aging population.

Public officials to be promoted based on performance
The cabinet approved a law revision Tuesday to introduce a performance-based personnel management system in the public sector. The proposal still needs approval from the National Assembly.
