Jeju Air, Jin Air face penalties
Both budget carriers found in violation of safety regulations

Meanwhile, the two largest budget carriers, Jeju Air and Jin Air, face penalties for safety violations.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the results of its probe into two recent aviation incidents and said they both resulted from negligence regarding safety regulations.

On December 23rd, a Jeju Air jet was forced to rapidly lower its altitude because the pilot failed to turn on the cabin air supply switch after takeoff. And on December 30th, a Jin Air plane ended up returning to the airport after takeoff when a loud sound was heard near one of its cabin doors. Probe results showed that a mechanic had not properly performed maintenance prior to the flight.

The ministry said each of the budget airlines will be suspended from operation for a maximum of seven days or face fines of 600 million won and the pilots and mechanics held responsible will be suspended from work for 30 days.

제주항공·진에어 사고 모두 '인재'

지난달 있었던 제주항공과 진에어의 운항사고는 기본적인 안전절차를 지키지 않아 발생한 인재로 밝혀졌습니다.

국토교통부에 따르면 지난달 23일 객실 여압장치 이상으로 급하강한 제주항공 항공기 사고는 조종사가 기내 공기압 조절 스위치를 작동시키지 않은 채 이륙하고, 여압시스템에 대한 이해가 부족해 발생한 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.

또 지난달 30일 출입문 이상으로 회항한 진에어 항공기 사고는 정비사가 운항 전에 정비를 제대로 하지 않은데다 조종사의 비상상황에 대한 미숙한 대응 때문에 발생한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

국토부는 해당 항공사에 최대 운항정지 7일 또는 과징금 6억 원, 해당 조종사와 정비사에 대해서는 자격정지 30일 처분을 내릴 방침입니다.
