Jeju takes measures to prevent Zika virus outbreak
‘Low’ possibility of problems in South Korea

The provincial government is taking heightened precautions to prevent an outbreak of the Zika virus here... after the World Health Organization declared the mosquito-borne virus an international health threat.

Exterminators will start fumigating populated areas earlier than usual to kill off mosquitoes and special attention will be paid to international arrivals.

While the possibility of the Zika virus causing problems in South Korea is considered low, recent outbreaks around the world have been associated with reports of birth defects, including babies with very small heads, and of paralysis in adults.

지카바이러스 확산으로 세계보건기구가 국제 공중보건위기상황을 선포한 가운데,
제주특별자치도가 바이러스 유입을 막기 위해 선제적 대응을 강화합니다.

이를 위해 보건위생과장을 반장으로 하는 대책 상황반을 편성하고, 지카바이러스 매개모기의 서식을 집중 감시하는 한편, 모기 방제를 위한 방역 소독 체계도 조기 가동합니다.

특히 제주검역소 등 유관기관과의 협조를 통해 바이러스 발생국가 여행객의 검역을 강화할 예정입니다.

지카바이러스는 갑작스런 발열과 근육통 등을 유발하는 바이러스로, 바이러스에 감염된 숲모기에 물릴 경우 사람에게도 옮겨질 수 있습니다.
