‘New policies needed to raise global awareness of “haenyeo”’

A provincial council member has stressed the need for new policies to raise global awareness of Jeju women sea divers, called “haenyeo” in Korean.

Lee Seon-hwa (이선화) said Tuesday that, unlike Japan’s “ama” divers, Jeju’s haenyeo are gaining less and less global attention. She emphasized that getting the haenyeo listed as UNESCO heritage was not the ultimate goal.

Instead, Lee said, Jeju needed to focus on creating new ways to sustain the culture of the island’s traditional sea divers... and called for the provincial government to create policies that enable more people around the world to learn about and become aware of Jeju haenyeo.

제주해녀문화의 발전을 위해 세계인과 공감대를 확산하고 지속시킬 수 있는
정책을 마련해야 한다는 요구가 나왔습니다.

제주도의회 이선화 의원은 오늘(16일) 임시회 본회의 5분 발언을 통해,
일본 아마와 다르게 제주 해녀에 대한 전세계인들의 관심은 갈수록 줄어들고 있다며,
제주해녀문화의 세계화는 유네스코 등재가 최종 목표가 아니라고 강조했습니다.

따라서 제주도는 전세계인들의 공감대를 확산시킬 수 있는
제주해녀문화의 지속성에 대한 정책을 내놔야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
