Mosquito control drive launched to prevent Zika infections
No confirmed cases in South Korea

National authorities have launched a mosquito control drive to prevent possible Zika virus infections.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced Wednesday it will step up monitoring of the Asian tiger mosquito in Jeju, Busan, (통영) Tongyeong, and other warm regions where the mosquito may breed in large numbers.

It will also be handing out guidelines to local governments within the month on how to breeding prevention and extermination.

Experts say the Asian tiger mosquito spreads the virus. It becomes active around May. South Korea has so far had no confirmed Zika virus cases, but authorities are taking preemptive actions to exterminate the mosquitoes, as the World Health Organization last month declared the Zika virus a global health emergency.

지카바이러스 매개충인 흰줄숲모기에 대한 동절기 조사가 시작됐습니다.

질병관리본부는 제주와 부산 통영 등 주요 아열대 지역 5 곳을 대상으로
다음달 초까지 흰줄숲모기 채집과 동절기 활동상황 등을 조사할 계획입니다.

또 3월부터 10월까지 흰줄숲모기의 서식밀도와 병원체 감염 여부 등을 확인할 방침입니다.

아울러 지카바이러스 감염 예방을 위한 국민 행동 수칙과
지역별 방제지침도 지자체와 관공서에 배포할 예정입니다.
