Jeju naval base opening ceremony slated for Feb. 26
Prime minister, defense minister to be among attendees

Concluding two decades of preparations and controversies, the Navy is set to hold an opening ceremony for its new naval base at the civilian-military complex port in Gangjeong.

The ceremony is set for February 26th and will be attended by government officials including Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn (황교안) and Defense Minister Han Min-goo (한민구).

Construction began in 2010. A total of around one-trillion won has been spent on the dual-use port, which is capable of simultaneously accommodating up to 20 combat vessels and two 150,000-ton cruise ships.

Villagers allied with environmentalists and religious leaders are expected to hold protests at the site on the day of the opening ceremony.

함정 20여 척과 15만톤급 크루즈 선박 두 척이 동시에 계류할 수 있게 지어졌습니다.
 
한편 강정마을회 등 반대단체들은 준공식이 열리는 시간에 맞춰
해군기지 앞에서 반대집회를 가질 예정입니다.
