Largest colony of Jeju grapefern found to date
4,000 of the rare plants discovered in Gimnyeong ‘gotjawal’ forest

Researchers have discovered in Gimnyeong the largest colony they’ve ever come across of the Jeju grapefern.

The World Heritage and Mt. Hallasan Research Institute said it found the colony of the rare species inside the Gimnyeong-ri (김녕리) gotjawal forest in November.

The Jeju grapefern grows exclusively in Jeju wetlands and has been declared “endangered” by the environment ministry.

The newly-discovered colony consists of some 4,000 Jeju grapeferns. It spans an area of 220 square meters and is located 100 meters above sea level.

제주에서만 서식하는 제주고사리삼의 최대 군락지가 발견됐습니다.

세계유산한라산연구원은 지난해 11월 김녕리 곶자왈 지역 희귀식물 분포 조사 과정에서 환경부지정 멸종위기 야생식물 2급으로 보호받고 있는
제주고사리삼 군락지를 발견했습니다.

이번에 발견된 지점은 김녕 곶자왈 해발 100m지역으로
제곱미터당 최대 4백개체가 분포한 것으로 확인됐으며
분포면적은 220제곱미터, 전체 개체수는 4천개체로
지금까지 발견된 군락지 가운데 최대규모입니다.
