Ideas laid out for 6th revision to Jeju Special Law
Public briefings planned for tax, administrative proposals
The provincial government has announced some of the changes it will seek in this year’s sixth revision to the Jeju Special Law, which is what gives the province its semi-autonomy.
The proposed changes include increasing the tourism promotion fund, transferring authority from the central government to the local government in regards to imposing individual consumption tax on golf courses, tax exemptions for the preservation of gotjawal forests, and returning casino profits to society.
Jeju also plans to push to make local mayors public servants, requiring them to undergo confirmation hearings.
The province plans to hold public briefings on these issues within the first half of the year, then seek approval for the proposals from the provincial council before starting negotiations on them with national authorities.
