Huge anchovy haul
4X as much sold this season as last

Large schools of anchovies have been found in Jeju waters, south of the island… bringing in bigger-than-expected profits for fishermen this season.

So far this year, 640 tons of anchovies have been sold through the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative in Moseulpo. That’s four times the amount sold in the same period a year ago. Total sales have topped 210 million won, which is three times last year’s figure.

The fish is going for three-to-four hundred won per kilogram...60 percent more than in 2015.

The provincial government says it will intensify its crackdown on illegal fishing in the waters off Seongsan and Gapado, which is where most of the anchovies are currently being caught.

제주 남쪽 바다를 중심으로 멸치어장이 형성되면서
어민들이 짭짤한 소득을 올리고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 올들어 모슬포 수협의 멸치 위판량은
640톤에 2억 1천여만원으로
지난해 같은기간에 비해 물량으로는 400%,
액수로는 300% 증가했습니다.

특히 위판단가는 10킬로그램에 평균 3천 ~ 4천원으로
지난해에 비해 최고 60% 상승하고 있습니다.

제주도는 최근들어 서귀포와 성산포, 가파도 연안해역을 중심으로
멸치어장이 형성되고 있다며
이 일대에서 다른지방 대형어선의 불법조업에 대한
단속을 강화할 계획입니다.
