It’s nearly the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters.
The gods of Egypt are a wrathful bunch. And this week more so than usual. This is most likely because of the subpar Gods of Egypt. But let’s not dwell on what should have been a good movie and move on to what are actually good movies.

This week we’ve got peaks at Room and 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, both movies worth a look this weekend.

Let’s dive right in and see what’s going on.

Room (2015, Lenny Abrahamson)
Jack and his mother escape a room where they’ve been trapped.

Room is coming off an Academy Award win for Best Actress for star Brie Larson.

Room is both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, a unique and touching exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child. After 5-year-old Jack and his mother escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. As he experiences all the joy, excitement, and fear that this new adventure brings, he holds tight to the one thing that matters most of all--his special bond with his loving and devoted mother.

This is a strong, quality drama that can touch something in all of us. And while it explores the deep bonds of maternal love, it doesn’t become overly sentimental. It starts dark, but with an unquenchable optimism. In fact, if there’s one criticism that can be levied against it, it’s that the second half can’t quite hold up to the first. But this is nitpicking, and anyone looking for a beautiful drama to enjoy this weekend should go check this out out.

13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016, Michael Bay)
An American ambassador is killed at a U.S. compound in Libya.

Based on true events, and coming to us from director Michael Bay, is 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

It’s being called a comparatively mature and restrained effort from the director/producer known for his over-the-top action sequences involving plenty of explosions, albeit one that can't quite boast the impact its fact-based story deserves.

In 2012, an American ambassador was killed in Benghazi, Libya. Now, a security team made up of ex-soldiers are trying to piece together what happened and get out safely.

Some might question its politics and ideology, its depth and its portrayal of US valour, but regardless, 13 Hours is an action-packed thriller that will keep fans of Bay and of the genre entertained.
