Automatic crosswalk lights to be tested
New system designed to help visually-impaired, elderly

The provincial government will this month test automatic crosswalk lights that are designed to make crossing the street easier for some people.

The state-of-the-art lights activate automatically when a pedestrian approaches a crosswalk and is detected by closed-circuit cameras or infrared sensors. The provincial police agency says Jeju City and Seogwipo will each test-run one of the systems within the month.

After the trial period, more will likely be installed at crosswalks across the island.

Police say the new system is expected to help the visually impaired and the elderly. Both of those groups sometimes struggle to use pedestrian crossing buttons.

제주특별자치도 자치경찰단은 보행자가 횡단보도에 대기하면
CCTV 카메라나 적외선 센서로 자동 감지해 신호등을 작동하는
이른바 자동인식 신호기를 이달중에 제주시와 서귀포 지역에 한군데씩 설치해 운영합니다.

그리고 효과분석 후 점차 확대한다는 계획입니다.

자치경찰단은 기존의 누름식 버튼 사용법을 잘 모르는 시각장애인이나
고령자의 보행안전에 도움을 줄 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.
