Planned tourism complex in Seogwipo scrapped
Project in Donghong-dong had been idle for years

The plan to build a new tourism complex in Seogwipo has been scrapped, after over a decade of delays. The move has also resulted in the lifting of a restriction that required all land transactions in the area to receive government approval.

The provincial government announced Wednesday that the Jeju Free International City Development Center, or JDC, the project developer, was no longer seen as having any intention of proceeding with the plan. The province said it therefore lifted the designation of the 3.7-million-square-meter site around (미약산) Miyaksan Mountain in (동홍동) Donghong-dong as a Land Transaction Permission Zone.

This means that land transactions in the area no longer require local government approval.

The plan to create a second tourism complex was launched in 2005 but was initially halted in 2008. The project was then passed over to the JDC in 2010, but it never got off the ground.

서귀포 제2관광단지 조성사업이 10년 넘게 표류하면서
사업 예정지 일대에 대한 토지거래허가 구역도 해제됐습니다.

제주도는 제2관광단지 사업 시행자인 JDC가 해당 사업에 대한 추진 계획이 없다고 판단해 서귀포시 동홍동 미약산 주변 374만제곱미터에 대한
토지거래허가 구역을 해제했다고 밝혔습니다.

이에따라 종전 토지거래계약 허가에 의해 부여된 토지이용 의무가 없어지게 되고, 앞으로는 허가 없이도 토지거래를 할 수 있습니다.

제2관광단지 조성사업은 지난 2005년 처음 계획이 수립됐지만
2008년 정부의 공기업 선진화방안으로 중단된데 이어
2010년 사업자가 한국관광공사에서 JDC로 바뀌면서
지금까지 표류하고 있습니다.
