‘Warning’ for public officials’ social media postings
Officials required to remain publicly neutral in elections

With just over a month to go until the April 13th general elections, the Jeju Election Commission has given out warnings to 20 public officials for pressing the ‘like’ button for, or posting supportive comments about, preliminary candidates on social media.

The commission’s Cyber Fair Election Support Team also ordered the officials to delete the posts that were clearly supportive of specific preliminary candidates on Facebook and Twitter.

The commission explained that they had violated their responsibility to remain neutral regarding political parties and candidates.

제주특별자치도 선거관리위원회가 제20대총선 예비후보들의 SNS에 댓글이나 좋아요 버튼을 클릭한 공무원 20명에게 시정을 요구했습니다.

도 선관위 사이버공정선거지원단은 예비후보들의 페이스북과 트위터 등에서 응원 댓글 등을 남긴 공무원에게 게시글 삭제를 요청하고 경고조치를 내렸습니다.

선관위는 공무원이 특정 정당이나 후보자에 대해
반복적으로 지지하거나 반대의사를 표현하는 것은
공무원 정치 중립 의무를 위반한 사례에
해당한다고 설명했습니다.
