Jeju April 3rd Incident not included in school history books
Provincial office of education plans to create separate material

Elementary school books include no mention of the Jeju April 3rd Incident, for which a national memorial day has been designated.

The Jeju Provincial Office of Education says it found that history textbooks currently being used at all elementary schools in the nation do not include any information on the incident, meaning students do not learn about the uprising and massacre that took place nearly seven decades ago.

The education office added that it planned to make separate material on the Jeju April 3rd Incident by the end of the year… to be used for education on peace and human rights issues.

국가추념일인 제주 4.3이 초등학교 교과서에는
수록되지 않은 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주도교육청은 현재 전국의 모든 초등학교에서 사용하는
국정 사회교과서에 4.3사건 관련 내용이 수록되지 않은 것으로
파악하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

이에 따라 제주지역을 제외한 다른 시·도 초등학생들은
정규 수업시간에 4·3에 대해 배우지 못하고 있는 것으로 알려졌습니다.

한편 제주도교육청은 4·3 평화·인권교육을 위한 교재가
올 연말까지 제작해 보급할 예정이라고 밝혔습니다.
