The Jeju Free International City Development Center, or JDC, runs an annual lecture series, and the tenth of the course has just begun. Thought-provoking speakers from a wide variety of fields are scheduled to take the stage this year. Here’s Joseph Kim with a report on the first lecture of the year, by an honorary professor at Ewha Womans University named Yoo Jang-hee.

Opening ceremony for 10th JDC Global Academy lecture series

On March 29th, the JDC Global Academy began their 10th course at the Jeju Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Students had already packed the venue before the lecture had even begun.

Listening to a good lecture leaves me with some interesting thoughts, so I didn’t miss the talk. I really enjoy coming to them.

"좋은 강의 듣고 그러면 머릿속에 한두가지는 꼭 담고 가거든요. 그래서 안 빠져요. 너무 좋아서요."

Yoo Jang-hee, an honorary professor at Ewha Womans University, was the first lecturer. He pointed out that since the global economy is in recession, it has negatively impacted Korea’s economic growth, so it is time to revitalize the domestic market in order to turn the tide.

"국내 수요를 창출하자. 기업들에게 (국내의 부실한 인프라) 공사를 맡기자. 그래서 기업도 살고 고용이 창출되고 나라는 나라대로 탄탄해지고…"

He highlighted the importance of policy amendments in order to contribute to Korea’s economic growth.
