This is the Jeju International Airport. Electric mosquito traps are set up to monitor insects that may transmit infection.
The installation this year was two months earlier than average in order to monitor the Aedes species that carries the Zika virus.

We usually install mosquito traps between April and November. But this year, we set them up as early as February because we need to monitor for Aedes mosquitoes, which can transmit the Zika virus, which is spreading across Brazil.

"저희들이 평상시에는 4월부터 11월까지 설치해서 채집을 했지만, 올해는 2월부터 앞당겨서 설치했습니다. 그 이유는 최근에 브라질에서 유행하고 있는 지카바이러스 때문에 흰줄숲모기의 분포상태를 조사하기 위해서 설치했고요."
While the whole nation is closely watching infection cases caused by mosquitos, national authorities have now issued a Japanese Encephalitis warning.
The first discovery this year of the mosquito species that carries the Japanese encephalitis virus was on March 29th.

The warning this year was the earliest in the past decade, 5 days earlier than last year and over 15 days earlier than 2014.

95 percent of people infected don’t show any symptoms or suffer only a mild fever.
However, in the worst cases, encephalitis can cause severe nervous system complications and lead to death.

Last year, 40 people were diagnosed with the Japanese Encephalitis and there were two deaths.
The number of those infected is on the rise.

Inoculation is the best way to prevent the disease.

If a child gets vaccinated now, the child becomes immune to Japanese encephalitis and will be safe in the summer. Children between one and 12 years old need to be inoculated before summer.

"백신접종을 지금 하면 7, 8월에 모기가 많이 나왔을 때 모기에 물리더라도 일본 뇌염에 걸리지 않도록 면역이 형성됩니다. 그래서 지금 백신접종을 하지 않은 12세 이하의 어린이들은 백신접종을 서둘러서 해주시고요. "
Suggested safety precautions include window screens, using mosquito nets when sleeping and wearing long-sleeved clothes outdoors to prevent bites.

Experts advise that you should be vigilant about keeping your yard free of stagnant water.
Given that there is no treatment for the disease, preventing mosquito bites is the most effective way to protect oneself from the virus.
