A special photo exhibition is taking place… unveiling pictures of Jeju’s natural environment... taken over the past ten years. Suejin Choi reports.
Jeju’s natural scenery has many faces.

It is... at times... enraged… with its high waves and strong winds.

At other times, Jeju’s nature is filled with warmth.
The island’s gradient red sunset… is like the warmth of a mother’s arms.

The vibrant colors of Jeju’s nature are well-expressed at this photography exhibition, titled ‘Mountain Sea and Wind’.

The exhibition is currently underway at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center, displaying works by photographer Byun Hyun-woo (변현우).

It’s been about 10 years since I started to really appreciate Jeju and take pictures of the island. Over the years, I’ve managed to take hundreds of pictures, but I chose just a select few to represent the island for this exhibition.

"제주도를 제대로 방문하고 혼자 걷기 시작한지가 한 10년 정도 됐습니다. 그러면서 이때까지 모아놓은 작품이 수백점이 되는데
그 중에서 가장 대표적인 것을 골라서 표현했습니다."

Jeju’s picturesque landscape was what motivated Byun to relocate to the island… and in 2011, he held a personal photo exhibition in Seoul to portray a part of that… showcasing photography on Udo (우도)... the island within an island.

Also on display are pictures taken by members of the Jeju Healing Photographer’s Group of which Byun is also a member.

Local visitors... say the pictures at the exhibition bring out the special in what would otherwise be overlooked as ordinary to them.

I’m really touched at how beautiful Jeju’s nature has been expressed in these photos. Even though I live here, I never realized how beautiful the island was. This exhibition has been a learning experience for me.

Through the eyes of photographer Byun Hyun-woo... the pictures on display add new meaning to Jeju’s breathtaking scenery. The exhibition runs until May 30th at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center.
