Fact-finding investigation into naval base ‘impossible’
Governor says he’s asked PM to withdraw Navy’s right to indemnity

The governor says it is no longer possible to conduct a fact-finding investigation into the Jeju Naval Base, but that he has asked the prime minister to withdraw the Navy’s right to indemnity.

The comments came during a Tuesday hearing at the provincial council, when council members asked Governor Won Heeryong his stance on the two issues regarding the military installation in Gangjeong, Seogwipo.

Won responded by saying that, although he initially proposed conducting a fact-finding investigation shortly after he took office, he faced opposition by the Gangjeong village chief, and now that base construction is complete, it’s too late.

The governor added that, in order to protect Gangjeong residents, he urged Prime Minister Hwang Gyo-an to lift the right to indemnity granted to the Navy.

원희룡 제주특별자치도지사는 오늘(19일) 열린 제주도의회 도정질문에서
해군기지 진상조사와 구상권 철회 요구를 할 의향이 있느냐는 질문을 받고,
취임 직후 진상규명을 하자고 먼저 제안을 했지만, 강정마을회장이 거부의 뜻을 밝혔다며, 해군기지가 완공된 지금은 이미 시기를 놓쳤다고 답변했습니다.

다만 구상권 부분에 대해서는 강정주민을 보호할 수 있도록
황교안 국무총리에게 철회를 건의했다고 말했습니다.
