Korea’s first groundwater quality rating system
Provincial government to introduce 4-level scheme next year

Jeju will introduce a new groundwater quality rating system… becoming the first province in the nation to do so.

Currently the quality of Jeju’s underground water is divided into just two categories: that suitable for just farming and that cleared for everyday use. But once the new system is implemented next year, it will be rated on a scale of four.

The highest quality groundwater, level 1, will be preserved through the designation of a restricted zone at the site it was found. Level 2 will be used as drinking water, while levels 3 and 4 will be used in agriculture.

Meanwhile, quality checks for drinking water on the island will be conducted every year, rather than every two, in line with amendments made to groundwater management provisions.

전국 최초 지하수질 등급제 도입

제주특별자치도가 전국에서 최초로 지하수질 등급제를 도입합니다.

제주도는 그동안 농업용수와 생활용수 등 지하수를 용도별로 구분했지만 내년부터 지하수질을 4등급으로 나눠 관리합니다.

이에따라 수질이 가장 좋은 1등급은 지하수 허가 제한 구역으로 지정해 보존하고 2등급 지하수는 먹는 물 수질 기준에 맞춰 관리할 계획입니다.

3등급과 4등급 지하수는 농업용수 등으로 활용하고 방류 기준도 강화할 방침입니다.

또 지하수관리조례 개정을 통해 마시는 물 수질검사 기준을 현재 2년에서 1년으로 단축할 계획입니다.
