Desalination plants to be upgraded on Gapado, Marado
Islets surrounding Jeju lack sufficient freshwater

The Jeju office of water resources says it will upgrade the seawater desalination plants on the small islands of Gapado and Marado.

A total of 4 billion won will be used for the upgrade on Gapado. Once completed in 2017, the work on the desalination facility there will allow it to desalt 300 tons of seawater daily. Its current capacity is 150 tons.

Another 2.5 billion won will be spent on Marado to double the capacity of the facility there from 75 tons daily to 150.

The islets surrounding Jeju, which also include Udo and Chujado, use seawater desalination plants to make up for a lack of freshwater.

가파도·마라도 해수담수화시설 보강

가파도와 마라도 지역에 바닷물을 상수도로 활용하는
해수담수화시설이 보강됩니다.

제주도수자원본부는 사업비 40억 원을 들여 내년까지 가파도 해수담수시설을
하루 150톤에서 300톤 규모로 두 배 증설합니다.

마라도에서 25억원을 투입해 내년까지 해수담수시설 처리 용량을
하루 75톤에서 150톤으로 늘릴 계획입니다.

현재 우도와 추자도 같은
다른 도서지역도 해수담수시설과
육상관로를 통해 물 부족 문제를 해결하고 있습니다.
