Crimes by Chinese in Jeju up 11-fold in last decade

The number of crimes committed in Jeju by Chinese citizens has increased 11-fold in the last decade.

The Jeju Provincial Police Agency says that out of the 393 non-Koreans penalized for criminal acts in 2015, 260, or 66 percent, were Chinese. The total in 2006 was only 23.

Jeju’s visa waiver travel program is seen as one of the reasons for the rise, as an influx of Chinese people have been coming to the island since its implementation.

In 2015 alone, more than 2.2 million Chinese travelers visited Jeju.

최근 10년사이 중국인 범죄 11배 증가

도내에서 중국인에 의한 범죄가 최근 10년 사이 11배나 늘어난 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주지방경찰청이 분석한 외국인 범죄 현황에 따르면 지난해 기준으로 범죄를 저질러 처벌받은 외국인은 모두 393명으로 이 가운데 중국인은 전체의 66%인 260명에 달했습니다.

이는 10년 전인 2006년 23명에 비해 11배 이상 늘어난 수치입니다. 경찰은 이에 대해 제주도가 무사증 입국 지역으로 정착되면서 관광 목적 외에도 돈벌이를 위한 중국인이 제주를 찾고 있기 때문으로 분석했습니다.

한편, 지난해 제주를 찾은 중국인은 모두 223만7천여 명에 이릅니다.
