Film festival underway in Gangjeong
Controversy forces venue change

The 1st International Peace Film Festival in Gangjeong is underway in the Seogwipo village.

After a controversy forced a venue change, the festival kicked off on Saturday at Gangjeong Cathedral with the opening film Upside Down. A total of 34 films are being screened through Tuesday in the Gangjeong village center and at the Gangjeong Peace Center.

A peace forum and book concert on historical issues relating to the island are being held on the sidelines of the main event.

Festival organizers planned to hold the festival at the Seogwipo Arts Center. Seogwipo municipal officials rejected their request because, they said, the festival was a politicized event.

내일 서귀포 강정마을 일대에서 개최됩니다.

강정국제평화영화제 조직위가 마련한 이번 영화제에서는
내일(23일) 서귀포성당에서 개막작 업사이드 다운을 시작으로
오는 26일까지 총 34개 작품이 강정마을회관과 강정평화센터
강정천 야외극장 일대에서 무료로 상영될 예정입니다.

이밖에도 '강정 오키나와 섬들의 연대'와 '기억 투쟁으로서의 영화'를 주제로 한 평화포럼과 북콘서트도 함께 열립니다.

강정국제평화영화제 조직위는 당초 서귀포시에
예술의전당 대관을 요청했지만 서귀포시는 정치성을 띤다는
이유로 대관을 불허해 논란이 됐습니다.
