Province courts controversy in bid to reinstate tax breaks
Tax reductions for foreign buyers of local condos phased out in October

Critics are crying foul now that the provincial government wants to reintroduce tax breaks on foreign-owned condominiums after phasing them out just six months ago.

The provincial government has given advance notice of legislation allowing foreigners who own condominiums in Jeju to pay the same in general taxes as Koreans do, beginning in 2018. They currently must pay relatively heavy acquisition and property taxes.

Those additional tax payments on foreign-owned condos just came into force in October. The province’s about-face to again lower taxes is what is causing controversy.

Jeju officials say they want to attract more foreign investors, and that this move is in line with similar actions being taken by other provinces across Korea.

세수확보차원에서 폐지했던 콘도미니엄에 대한 중과세 감면 제도가

하지만 지난해 10월, 당시 주택거래가 활성화되고 있는데다 세수 확보 차원에서
고급별장 등에 대한 중과세 감면을 폐지한지 6개월만에
부활하는 것이어서 논란이 일고 있습니다.

이에 대해 제주도는 외국인의 투자유치를 위한 차원이며,
다른지방에서도 경쟁적으로 세제감면을 추진하는 점을 감안한 조치라고
설명하고 있습니다.
