It’s nearly the weekend again and that means it’s time for Film Focus. Here’s Todd Thacker with two new movies opening in local theaters.
There’s something for everyone this week in theaters… from an action-packed picture from the Marvel universe, to a slow, dark, emotional study from the pen and camera of Angelina Jolie.

Captain America: Civil War (2016, Anthony & Joe Russo)
A political rift opens between Captain America and Iron Man.
There’ve been a number of comic book-based films out recently, and though some were hit or miss, this latest Marvel comics saga is an out-and-out winner.
In this film, directed spectacularly by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the Avengers split into two camps after Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) differ on how to defend humanity -- with or without government oversight.
Even if you’re not a comic book fan who is truly invested in the story, the balancing act in the storytelling of the conflict between the heros is by all accounts pitch perfect.
The action, visual effects, even the acting are a huge step above the standard fair. The only downside is, like most if not all the Marvel villains, Civil War’s baddie Baron Zemo detracts from an otherwise interesting cast of characters. Falcon, Crossbones, Spider-Man, Black Panther and others show up and don’t disappoint.
Overall, this is an action-packed ride that is guaranteed to keep you wanting more.

By the Sea (2015, Angelina Jolie)
An American dancer and her writer husband experience 1970s France.
Set in the early 1970s By the Sea tells the story of Vanessa (Angelina Jolie) and Roland (Brad Pitt) visiting the Maltese coast to contemplate their lives after years of marriage. Vanessa’s career as a dancer is behind her, as is her husband’s work as a best selling author. Both are in a funk.
Turns out, so is the film which is written and directed by Jolie. It’s so slow, and the characters so unlikeable, that apart from the beautifully shot scenery, By the Sea has little going for it. Some have described it as a vanity project for Jolie, and though that may be a bit harsh, it is definitely a niche picture.
Good luck trying to empathize with the rich, privileged, and bored duo and their attempt to rekindle their romance.
