Researchers find island’s largest and oldest king cherry
15.5 m tree is about 265 years old

The Korea Forest Research Institute says it has discovered the largest and oldest king cherry tree ever found on the island.

The 15-and-a-half-meter-high behemoth is near the Saryeoni Forest Path. It has a circumference of 4.49 meters.

Researchers studied the annual rings on the tree and determined that it is about 265 years old. That’s about 60 years older than a Bonggae-dong specimen that has been designated a natural monument.

왕벚나무 자생지에서 지금까지 발견된 수종보다 크고
수령이 250년이 넘는 최고령 왕벚나무가 발견됐습니다.

국립산림과학원 난대아열대산림연구소는
올해 초 사려니 숲길 인근 왕벚나무 자생지에서
높이 15.5m 둘레 4미터 49cm 의 왕벚나무를 발견했습니다.

나이테를 분석한 결과 추정 나이는 265년 생으로
천연기념물로 지정된 봉개동 왕벚나무 보다 60년 이상
많은 것으로 알려졌습니다.
