Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Eco-friendly plan for new Jeju port
  • Eco-friendly plan for new Jeju port Construction to have minimal impact on marine life Jeju’s new port will be built environmentally friendly, according to local officials. The provincial government made the announcement in response to concerns that the reclamation of nearly 1.3 million square meters of land at the newly planned site will harm the marine environment. Jeju said it will come up with measures to reduce environmental damage through consultation with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Results of these discussions will be included in its Strategic Environmental Assessment. The provincial government also said they will request expert advice on wave-overtopping along the coastline of Yongdam-dong(용담동) and devise flood countermeasures for the island by the second half of the year. In addition, the province plans to sit down with the central government to discuss compensation for affected fisheries. In the meantime, the municipal administration will seek out public opinion through May 12th on issues raised during an upcoming conference on the Strategic Environmental Assessment and finetune details with the Environment Ministry. • KCTV: Film Focus
  • It’s nearly the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. Time again to take a look at what the theatres have to offer for your entertainment. Children’s Day might be behind us, but this weekend still has a lot in store for kids to enjoy. Thanks to this past week’s holiday, a hit from two years ago is opening again in theatres, and is worth a look if you missed it on the big screen back then. So fill up that popcorn bucket, grab a drink, and put your feet up; it’s time to head to the silver screen. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] 45 Years (2016, Andrew Haigh) A couple gets news that promises to forever change their lives. We’ll get to the stuff for the kids in a minute. First, 45 Years, a solid adult drama that offers thought-provoking rewards for fans of the genre. There is just one week until Kate Mercer's forty-fifth wedding anniversary and the planning for the party is going well. But then a letter arrives for her husband. The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. By the time the party is upon them, five days later, there may not be a marriage left to celebrate. The movie stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, two veterans of the screen who put their incredible talents to use and allow the tragic tale to unfold in a way befitting its nature. Add in solid direction from Andrew Haigh and 45 Years is a drama that should move you with its emotional weight. [Slug CG] The Lego Movie (2014, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Chris McKay) An ordinary Lego worker is recruited for a special quest. The Lego Movie was a huge hit when it released two years ago, and there’s no reason to think anything has changed in the meantime. Beautifully animated, the movie follows lead character Emmett, a completely ordinary LEGO mini-figure. But Emmett is later identified as the most "extraordinary person" and the key to saving the Lego universe. Now, Emmet and his friends must go on an epic journey to stop the evil tyrant Lord Business. What’s special about this one is that the animation, voice acting, and story are spot-on. This makes it fun for not only kids, but also the generations of adults who grew up with the familiar blocks. There’s definitely some nostalgia here, and that’s a good thing.

  • Jeju land prices up 3.6%
  • Jeju land prices up 3.6% Biggest increase in Korea Land prices in Jeju rose at the fast pace in the nation in the first quarter. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Tuesday that the price of land in Jeju rose an average 3.64 percent, compared to the same period a year earlier. That’s about six-fold the national average of just 0.56 percent. Within Jeju, land prices rose 3.85 percent in Seogwipo and 3.51 percent in Jeju City. The biggest increase was recorded in Seogwipo’s Pyoseon-myeon… where land prices rose 5.5 percent. That was followed by Jeju City’s Gujwa-eup at 5.03 percent, Namwon-eup at 4.85 percent, and then Seongsan-eup at 4.66 percent. Ministry officials attributed the sharp rise to the increase in demand for both land around the planned site for Jeju’s new airport and coastal farmland.
