This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker profiles a rare sight on the island, a waterfall in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo that appears only after prolonged, heavy rain.
[Report]
The rainy season may bring with it many inconveniences, but when it rains heavily, there is a place on Jeju that actually comes alive.

Eongtto Waterfall in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo

This hidden gem is Eongtto (엉또) Waterfall, a sight in Seogwipo which is as rare as it is popular.

Due to the geography of this area, the 50-meter cliff remains dry for most of the year.

Appears after 70 millimeters or more of rainfall

The falls only appear if the area gets over 70 millimeters of rain over a relatively short period of time.

And with the prolonged downpour, it can become an unforgettable marvel.

The waterfall gets its name from a combination of words in the Jeju language. An eong is a cave no larger than a small hut. Tto means entrance. Together this hints at something small which stays hidden in the forest.

Accessible via Olle Trail 7-1

To get to the base of the waterfall, the easiest way is to take Olle walking trail 7-1 in the area of Wolsan (월산) village, Gangjeong-dong (강정동).

To experience this rare sight in person, you’ll have to time your visit soon after a heavy downpour. But as the waterfall is recognized to be one of Jeju’s most beautiful sites, you’re sure to be rewarded.
