Hanjin Group seeks more water for flight passengers
Environmental groups oppose request

The Hanjin Group has asked the provincial government to increase its supply of groundwater.

The group uses it as drinking water for airline passengers. Hanjin representatives say it needs more to accommodate the ever-increasing number of international passengers arriving in Jeju. They want the group’s supply doubled from the current 3,000 tons per month to 6,000 tons.

Local government officials will discuss the matter Wednesday.

Environmental groups have denounced the proposal. They argue that expanding groundwater production runs counter to the island’s policy of treating local water as a public resource. They are calling for new policies to prevent all expansions of groundwater use.

한진그룹이 제주도에 지하수 취수량을
늘려달라고 요청했습니다.

한진그룹은 국제선 승객 증가로
먹는 물 공급 물량이 부족해지면서
지난 3월 제주도수자원본부에 지하수 취수량을
현재 3천 톤에서 6천 톤으로 두 배 늘려달라고 요청했습니다.

제주도는 모레(18일) 한진그룹의 지하수 취수량 증산 요청 건에 대한
심의를 진행할 계획입니다.

한편 도내 시민단체들은 성명을 내고
공수화 정책을 역행하는 지하수 증산을 허가해서는 안된다며
지하수 개발을 원천적으로 막기 위한 제도개선이 시급하다고
주장했습니다.
