Groundwater levels to be measured every 5 years

Groundwater levels in Jeju will be measured every five years, instead of every ten, beginning next year.

The Jeju Office of Water Resources says doing so is in response to the island’s fast-growing population as well as climate change, which have both resulted in a faster pace of environmental changes to Jeju’s groundwater.

Officials will begin discussions with experts next month on the details of how to go about the more frequent analyses.

The last groundwater measurement in Jeju was conducted in 2012. The estimate then was just over 1.6 billion tons.

제주도내 지하수 함양량 조사가 10년에서 5년 주기로 단축됩니다.

제주특별자치도 수자원본부는
급격한 인구 증가와 기후변화에 따른
수자원 환경변화가 빠르게 진행됨에 따라
현재 10년 마다 이뤄지는 지하수 함양량 분석을 5년으로 앞당깁니다.

이에 따라 다음달부터 전문가와의 토론을 거쳐
분석 방법 등 세부계획을 마련한 후 내년부터 시행할 예정입니다.

지난 2012년에 조사된 지하수 함양량은
16억 7천 600만 톤으로 나타난 바 있습니다.
