Jeju population tops 650,000
Expected to surpass 660,000 this year

Jeju’s population has topped the 650-thousand mark.

The provincial government says 650,051 people were living here at the end of May. That includes both Korean and non-Korean residents.

The population surpassed 640,000 just six months ago, in December.

Analysts attribute the increase to the number of people moving to the island. In the first four months of this year alone, some 5,700 additional people became Jeju residents. That’s 35 percent more than during the same period last year.

If the trend continues, experts say the local population will top 660-thousand by year’s end.

제주 인구 65만 돌파…연말 66만 예상

제주도 인구가 65만 명을 넘어섰습니다.

제주특별자치도는 5월 말 현재 주민등록에 등재된 제주도 인구는
내국인과 외국인을 합해 65만 51명이라고 밝혔습니다.

지난해 12월, 64만 명을 넘어선 지 5개월 만에 65만 명을 돌파했습니다.

이 같은 현상은 제주로 전입해 오는 순유입 인구 증가에 따른 것으로,
올들어 4월까지 5천 700여 명이 유입돼 지난해 같은 기간보다 35% 늘었습니다.

순유입 인구가 지금의 추세를 유지한다면 올해 말에는 제주도 인구가
66만 명을 넘어설 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.
