Jeju Hyanggyo Daeseongjeon named National Treasure
Becomes island’s 7th addition to list

The (제주향교) Jeju Hyanggyo Confucian School and Shrine has been designated a National Treasure.

The Cultural Heritage Administration gave the traditional building high marks for reflecting Jeju’s unique style of architecture in naming it on Monday a National Cultural Property and National Treasure number 1902 .

Jeju is now home to seven National Treasures. This is the first wooden structure on the island to be listed in 53 years, when Gwandeokjeong was designated.

The (대성전) Daeseongjeon, one of the shrine’s two main halls, was built in 1394. After being moved several times… it finally ended up at its current location in 1827, during the 27th year of Kim (순조) Sunjo’s reign. It houses ancestral tablets and much of its Confucian architecture remains in its original form.

문화재청은 제주향교 대성전을
제주의 특수성이 반영된 건축물로 평가하고
오늘(13일)자로 국가지정문화재 보물 제1902호로 지정.고시했습니다.

제주향교 대성전이 국가 보물로 지정되기는
제주에서는 7번째, 목조건물로는 관덕정 이후 53년 만입니다.

제주향교 대성전은 1394년 창건된 것으로 추정되며
여러 차례 자리를 옮겨 순조 27년인 1827년에 현재 위치에 들어섰습니다
