Heavily populated areas to be redistricted
16 new ‘tong’ and 64 new ‘ban’ administrative districts

Following the surge in Jeju’s population, the province has decided to create new administrative districts by dividing currently heavily populated local districts.

16 additional ‘tong’ and 64 ‘ban’ districts will be formed within Ido 2-dong, Hwabuk-dong, Samyang-dong, Nohyeong-dong and Oedo-dong… all in Jeju City.

This redivision comes two years after the creation of seven new ‘tong’ and 36 new ‘ban.’ The latest additions will bring the total number of tong to 530, and it will push the island’s “ban” tally to 5,445.

Officials say they will create more administrative districts in Seogwipo within the second half of the year.

인구급증…16개통·64개반 신설

제주도내 인구가 증가함에 따라 행정 최하부 조직인 통,반도 늘어납니다.

제주특별자치도는 도시개발 등으로 인구유입이 두드러진 이도 2동과 화북동, 삼양동, 노형동, 외도동에서 16개 통, 64개 반을 신규 개설했습니다.

이번 통, 반 조정은 지난 2014년 7개 통, 36개 반이 늘어난 이후 2년 만으로, 이에 따라 제주도내 행정 조직은 530개 통, 5천 445개 반으로 확대됐습니다.

한편, 제주도는 올해 하반기 서귀포시 지역의 통반 조정도 진행할 계획입니다.
