In related news, household loans in April here in Jeju rose at the fastest pace so far in 2016.

the Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea says they totaled nine trillion won, up 268 billion over the March figure.

This is the highest monthly growth so far this year, and it is in sharp contrast to the overall downward trend nationwide.

The BOK attributes the surge to the heightened screening rules for mortgages that came into force a month later, in May.

4월 도내 가계대출 증가율 '최고'

도내 가계대출 규모가 큰 폭으로 증가했습니다. 한국은행 제주본부에 따르면 지난 4월 도내 가계대출잔액은 9조 원으로 전달보다 2천680억 원 늘었습니다.

이같은 증가율은 올 들어 가장 높은 것으로, 전국적으로 가계대출 증가율이 하락하는 것과는 대조적입니다.

한국은행은 지난달부터 제주에 적용된 주택담보대출 심사 강화를 앞두고 대출이 늘어난 것으로 분석하고 있습니다.
