This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at another of Jeju’s beaches. This time it’s Iho Tewoo Beach, which is right here in Jeju City.
Getting away from the summer heat is surprisingly easy on Jeju. This is especially true if you live in Jeju City, which is near the cool breezes higher up on Hallasan Mountain.
But if you’re more inclined toward the ocean, look no further than Iho Tewoo Beach, just east of the island’s most populous city.
This two-toned sandy beach, which is located along Jeju Olle Course 17, is 250 meters long and 120 meters wide. Its average depth and slope is shallow enough to make it family friendly. Lifeguards will be on duty during the high season, which this year is tentatively set for July 1st.
Facilities at Iho include a changing room, beach umbrellas, and showers. Its camp site can support up to 500 people. There are also a number of nearby restaurants and guest houses.

Public transportation includes buses 7, 31, and 37
To get to Iho Beach, a number of buses regularly run there -- including No. 7, 31 and 37. But if you’re in a hurry, it’s a short, inexpensive journey by taxi.

If you’re concerned about the quality of the water at Iho given its proximity to the city, you can rest easy. Inspectors from the Institute of Public Health and Environment regularly test samples from Iho and other beaches. They have all met or exceeded standards in a variety of categories, including contaminants.

In order to avoid dehydration and sunburn, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather. Fortunately the Korea Meteorological Administration maintains a detailed, up-to-date public database. To check on conditions at Iho Beach, go to bit.ly/ihobeach.
