Use of Bonggae-dong landfill extended to 2018
Jeju City officials, local residents hammer out deal

Jeju City officials and Bonggae-dong residents have agreed to extend the use of the Bonggae-dong landfill by two years.

The deal signed Tuesday expands the facility and extends its use until May 2018.

The province also agreed to provide funding for wind and solar power projects, as a first step towards creating a renewable energy town at the site once the landfill is no longer in operation.

The Bonggae-dong landfill had earlier been projected to reach full capacity by this October. A new landfill is under construction in Dongbok-ri, Gujwa-eup. It is due to be completed in May 2018.

사용할 수 있게 되면서 우려했던 쓰레기 대란은 피할 수 있게 됐습니다.

제주시와 봉개동 쓰레기매립장주민대책원회는 오늘(28일)
봉개동 폐기물처리시설에 대한 사용 연장 협약을 체결했습니다.

이번 협약으로 봉개동 매립장의 1공구와 2공구를 증설해
오는 2018년 5월까지 사용하기로 했습니다.

이와함께 매립장 부지에 신재생에너지 타운을 조성하기 위해
내년부터 풍력이나 태양광 사업 설치비용을 지원하기로 했습니다.

봉개동 매립장은 오는 10월 포화가 예상되고 있지만
구좌읍 동복리 신규 매립장은 2018년 5월 완공될 예정이어서
쓰레기 처리 공백에 대한 우려를 낳아 왔습니다.
