Korea-Japan fisheries deal falls through
Fishing in Japanese EEZ banned

A fisheries pact between Korea and Japan has fallen through. This is set to deal a blow to hairtail fishers from Jeju.

Officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries sat down with their Japanese counterparts in Tokyo last week to discuss mapping out an agreement on fishing conditions in the waters between the two countries. They reportedly failed to reach a deal.

As a result, Korean fishing boats currently in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone must be back within Korean waters by 12 a.m. Friday. Japanese authorities may seize the vessels of those who fail to do so.

한국과 일본 양국의 어업 협정이 결렬되면서
어민들의 갈치 조업에 차질이 불가피하게 됐습니다.

해양수산부는 지난 22일부터 24일까지 일본 동경에서 열린 2016년 어기 관련 한·일 어업협상 제2차 소위원회에서 양국 어선의 입어규모와 조업조건 등을 논의했지만 합의에 이르지 못했다고 밝혔습니다.

이에 따라 일본 배타적 경제수역에서 조업하고 있는 우리나라 어선들은 내일 자정까지 우리 수역으로 이동해야 하며
이를 위반할 경우 일본 단속선에 나포됩니다.
