Jeju to seek 5 more World Natural Heritage designations
Officials will finalize list of proposed sites by October

Local authorities want to get five more local sites added to UNESCO’s list of World Natural Heritage.

The five are: the caves in the upper region of Geomunoreum; Suwolbong in Gosan-ri; Chagwido and Socheongul Cave in Hallim-eup; and the Yongmeori Coastline.

The Geological Society of Korea studied the feasibility of the idea, as requested by the World Heritage and Mt. Hallasan Research Institute. Preliminary results showed that the five sites are quite likely to receive the designations… based on their universal, academic, and scenic value as well as their uniqueness, availability of legal protection measures, and the degree of support they enjoy from local residents.

The province will finalize its list of candidate sites by October and submit it to the Cultural Heritage Administration, which will then apply for the UNESCO designations.

세계자연유산 5개소 추가 지정 추진

세계자연유산을 확대하는 방안이 추진되는 가운데 거문오름 상류동굴군과 고산리 수월봉, 차귀도, 한림읍 소천굴, 용머리 해안 등 5개 지역이 유력하게 검토되고 있습니다.

제주도 세계유산.한라산연구원으로부터 세계자연유산지구 확대를 위한 타당성 조사용역을 맡은 대한지질학회는 중간보고회를 통해 이같이 결정했다고 밝혔습니다.

이들 5개 지역은 세계자연유산으로서의 탁월한 보편적 가치와 학술.경관적 가치, 희소성, 법적 보호체계 마련 여부, 지역주민 호응 등을 감안한 결과라는게 용역진의 설명입니다.

제주도는 오는 10월까지 세계자연유산 최종 후보군을 확정한 후 문화재청에 신청할 예정입니다.
