Jocheon to seek Ramsar Wetland City designation
Province spending \120m through end of year on initiative

Jocheon-eup is gearing up to seek designation as a Ramsar Wetland City.

The provincial government will spend 120 million won through the end of the year ensuring Jocheon meets the six requirements to receive the designation.

Work will include encouraging residents to reduce trash in wetland preservation areas and to save water as well as training area farmers in eco-friendly agricultural methods.

The Ministry of Environment will assess the nation’s five candidate sites before choosing one next July to apply for the Ramsar designation.

조천읍 람사르 습지도시 인증을 위한 준비가 순조롭게 진행되고 있습니다.

제주시는 올해 12월까지 1억2천여 만원을 지원받아 조천읍에 대한 람사르협약 습지도시 6가지 인증기준을 충족시키기 위한 작업을 진행중입니다.

주요 사업은 습지보전 쓰레기 줄이기와 물 절약 실천운동, 친환경농업확산 교육 등입니다.

환경부는 5개 후보지별로 인증기준 등을 평가해 내년 7월 최종 후보지로 선정할 예정이며
내년 초 쯤에는 윤곽이 나올 전망입니다.
