Foreign coral species found along Jeju coastline
Experts worry leather corals may disrupt local ecosystem

A foreign coral species has been found along the Jeju coastline and experts fear it may disrupt the local ecosystem.

The Jeju branch of the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute says it discovered a large group of ‘leather corals’ 14 to 20 meters underwater off Jeju’s southeastern coastline.

Leather corals are usually found in tropical areas such as the waters off the Philippines and Indonesia, and are known to encroach upon surrounding algae and invertebrates.

The institute says it will keep a close eye on the impact of the corals on the Jeju ecosystem.

지난달 제주 남동부해역에서 수중 조사한 결과
레더산호류가 수심 14~20미터에
넓게 분포하는 것을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.

레더산호류는 열대, 아열대 산호초 해역에서
주로 분포하는 외래종으로
적합한 환경에서 왕성한 생식을 통해
주변 해조류와 무척추동물을
잠식하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

제주수산연구소는
외래종이 제주 해양 생태계에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해
지속적으로 모니터링해 나갈 방침입니다.
