Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • ‘Jeju Haenyeo Museum should become national museum’ JNU professor says government could run it more effectively An academic says Jeju’s haenyeo museum should be made into a national museum. Jeju National University Professor (유철인) Yoo Cheol-in made the comments at a recent international conference on haenyeo culture. He noted that while the museum is the nation’s only dedicated to Jeju’s female divers, the private museum has lacked a proper management structure and therefore struggled. He therefore argued that it be converted into a national museum in order to run the facility more effectively. Adding to Professor Yoo’s remarks, the head of the planning and operations at the (미륵사지) Mireuksaji National Museum, Han Seung-ho (한승호), said that the transformation of that facility from private to public has proven invaluable in developing the museum and garnering national attention for it. "제주해녀박물관 국립으로 전환해야" 제주특별자치도의 제주해녀문화 국제학술대회가 오늘 하루 제주칼호텔에서 열린 가운데 해녀박물관을 국립으로 전환해야 한다는 주장이 나왔습니다. 이 자리에서 유철인 제주대 교수는 주제발표를 통해 해녀박물관의 경우 국내 유일의 해녀 관련 박물관이지만 조직 위상이나 전문성 면에서 많은 취약점을 가지고 있다며 효과적인 운영을 위해 국립박물관으로의 전환을 검토해야 한다고 주장했습니다. 또 한승호 국립미륵사지유물전시관의 팀장 역시 주제발표를 통해 미륵사지전시관 역시 도립에서 국립으로 전환 이후 많은 성과를 거뒀다며 무엇보다 국가적인 관심을 끌어올 수 있었다고 강조했습니다.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism surveyed 1,300 people between June 17th and 24th and announced that Jeju came in 6th with 7.9 percent of the votes. That’s down one spot from last year’s fifth-place finish. The reasons for the drop include the difficulty prospective travelers face when booking flight tickets to the island and how relatively expensive accommodations are here. Based on market research, the Jeju Tourism Organization found that as of yet no tour groups have cancelled reservations because of the missile defense system nor had there been any inquiries regarding THAAD. Hotel reservation figures are similar to last year and there have not been any signs of a downturn in business. The organization did add, however, that should the Chinese government decide to intervene on the THAAD issue, the number of Chinese arrivals could drop, which would be disastrous for the local tourism industry, as so many of Jeju’s visitors are from China. This week, Demolition is just such a movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and joins Now You See Me 2 in theatres. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Demolition (2016, Jean-Marc Vallee) A man who lost his wife wipes his old life to start a new one. Let’s a take a quick look at Demolition to gets things rolling. Davis is a successful investment banker who is struggling after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father-in-law, Phil, to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis' letters catch the attention of customer service rep, Karen, and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris, Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew. With average reviews, the movie has its share of faults, mostly a somewhat confusing story that tries a bit too hard to be profound, instead settling for cliches. What it gets right, though, is its cast, with Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper, and lead Jake Gyllenhaal all doing their best with the material. [Slug CG] Now You See Me 2 (2016, Jon M. Chu) The Four Horsemen return and are recruited by a tech genius. Moving on to Now You See Me 2, we find a lot of what made the 2013 movie so fun. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public's adulation with their magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry, a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all. This sequel is all about the spectacle, the sleight-of-hand. As long as you don’t go in expecting true magic you’ll leave satisfied.

  • Foreign coral species found along Jeju coastline Experts worry leather corals may disrupt local ecosystem A foreign coral species has been found along the Jeju coastline and experts fear it may disrupt the local ecosystem. The Jeju branch of the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute says it discovered a large group of ‘leather corals’ 14 to 20 meters underwater off Jeju’s southeastern coastline. Leather corals are usually found in tropical areas such as the waters off the Philippines and Indonesia, and are known to encroach upon surrounding algae and invertebrates. The institute says it will keep a close eye on the impact of the corals on the Jeju ecosystem. 제주 연안에 외래종 산호류 집단 서식 제주 연안에 유입 외래종 산호류가 집단 서식하는 것으로 확인돼 생태계 교란이 우려됩니다. 국립수산과학원 제주수산연구소는 지난달 제주 남동부해역에서 수중 조사한 결과 레더산호류가 수심 14~20미터에 넓게 분포하는 것을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다. 레더산호류는 열대, 아열대 산호초 해역에서 주로 분포하는 외래종으로 적합한 환경에서 왕성한 생식을 통해 주변 해조류와 무척추동물을 잠식하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 제주수산연구소는 외래종이 제주 해양 생태계에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 지속적으로 모니터링해 나갈 방침입니다.

Jeju City officials say they collected 35.9 billion won in taxes on 201,100 properties in July. Compared to the same period a year ago, that’s up 9 percent, or 2.9 billion won. Experts attribute the rise to more newly-built homes and the overall increase in real estate prices in Jeju. In the city, the highest amount of property tax collected was from the Ramada Hotel at 268 million won… and the lowest was from a private home in Ora-dong at 2.31 million won. 주택가격 상승에 재산세 부과액 9% 올라 주택가격 상승의 영향로 재산세도 크게 오른 것으로 나타났습니다. 제주시는 7월분 정기분 재산세로 20만1천100여 건에 359억원을 부과했다고 밝혔습니다. 이는 지난해 보다 29억원, 9% 가까이 증가한 것으로 주택과 건축물의 신축 증가와 주택가격 상승이 주요인으로 분석됩니다. 제주시내 최고 건축물은 라마다호텔로 2억6천800만원이며 주택은 오라동 단독주택으로 231만원입니다.

The announcement to freeze the record low rate was made Thursday by BOK Governor Lee Ju Yeol. The BOK decided not to cut the rate because of the post-Brexit impact on the global economy, but said that it would closely monitor the international market and any changes in monetary policies in major countries. The key interest rate was cut to its current all-time low of 1.25 percent last month. 한국은행 기준금리 연 1.25% 동결 한국은행의 기준금리가 현재의 연 1.25% 수준으로 동결됐습니다. 한국은행은 오늘(14일) 오전 이주열 총재 주재로 금융통화위원회를 열어 기준금리를 현재의 연 1.25% 수준으로 유지하기로 했습니다. 한은은 현재 브렉시트 등으로 국제금융시장의 변수가 많은 만큼 금리를 동결해 앞으로의 상황을 지켜보겠다는 입장입니다. 한편 기준금리는 지난달 사상 최저수준인 연 1.25%로 떨어졌습니다.

  • Eye infections spreading Ratio of patients doubled in matter of weeks Health authorities are urging locals to be careful as an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with eye infections. The provincial government says 27 of every thousand island residents had an infection in mid-June, but that that ratio more than doubled to 59.5 people out of a thousand by early July. Health experts say that is especially worrisome because it is more than four times higher than the 13.8 recorded in the same period a year ago. Most patients are reportedly under 19 years of age. Health officials are advising everyone to take extra care to maintain a high level of hygiene. 유행성 눈병 확산 조짐…환자 크게 늘어 최근 유행성 눈병 환자가 늘고 있어 예방에 각별한 주의가 필요합니다. 제주특별자치도에 따르면 인구 1천명당 유행성 눈병 환자 수는 지난 6월 중순 27명에서 7월 초 59.5 명으로 두 배 이상 증가했습니다. 특히 지난해 같은 기간 13.8명 보다 무려 네 배 이상 환자가 늘면서 유행성 눈병이 확산조짐을 보이고 있습니다. 제주도는 유행성 눈병은 19살 이하에서 많이 발생하고 있다며 철저한 위생관리를 당부하고 있습니다.

  • Electric energy consumption to peak at 819,000 kW this summer Korea Power Exchange foresees no problems in energy supply The Korea Power Exchange predicts electric energy consumption in Jeju will peak at 819,000 kilowatts this summer. The Jeju branch of the KPE says this year’s maximum power use will be about 60,000 kilowatts higher than last year’s. The agency says it foresees no problems in supply, as it has raised the island's maximum capacity to 1,047,000 kilowatts. That’s 27.8 percent higher than expected peak demand. That buffer is, however, a little lower than last year, when the difference between capacity and maximum demand was 30.2 percent. 제주 올 여름철 최대전력 81.9만kw 전망 올 여름철 제주지역 최대 전력 사용량이 81만 9천킬로와트를 기록할 것으로 전망됐습니다. 전력거래소 제주지사는 여름철 최대전력이 지난해 75만 9천킬로와트보다 5만 9천킬로와트 더 많은 81만 9천kW에 달할 것으로 전망했습니다. 이에 대한 전력설비 공급능력은 104만7천kW를 확보해 공급예비율은 27.8%로 지난해 30.2%보다는 다소 떨어졌지만 전력 수급에는 차질이 없을 것으로 예상했습니다.
